Norlynne
Coar is an eclectic, multi-media artist who works mainly in paint,
photography and clay. Her work as an artist reflects her interests,
philosophy, experience.
She
was born in 1949 and grew up on the California coast. Her father was
an extraordinarily creative and experimental photographer whose
photographs filled the family home along with the art her parents
collected in Japan. From an early age, her parents encouraged
creativity and the practice of art and music.
Growing up curious
about the world and other cultures, she studied Cultural Anthropology
and Eastern religions in college and has traveled extensively --
often alone to remote places from Brazil to India. She is a perpetual
student of the arts, photography and film.
Coar
has lived in Taos off and on since 1979 and has been a working artist
since the 80s when her work was exhibited in Taos, Santa Fe, Los
Angeles and San Francisco. Her stylized watercolor and metallic
gouache paintings and richly saturated abstracts have been included
in many corporate collections and public venues.
After returning to school to study film in the mid-90s, she worked for several years in the film industry, after which she returned to her first love of creating tactile art. She spent several years as an artist-in-residence in Europe, then returned to Taos where she lives and creates art in a variety of media. With the ocean water in her veins, she lives in a world of blue and motion – of ocean, waves and sky – which figure prominently in her art with imagery inspired by her life and environment.
