The ocean is an integral part of me. I live in a world of blue. In Taos, the sky is my ocean and the clouds my waves.
I am a traveler, a dreamer, an explorer, and a thinker. A lot of my creativity derives from the landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes of places where I've traveled and lived. The ocean, the sky and forms in the landscape inspire me, and the Mediterranean is a uncorks my imagination. At times my work is a stylized interpretation of reality but often it appears abstract. But, while my imagery may look abstract, for me there is always an underlying concept or story, or a transition of the subject from one form into another.
I tend to work in series of three to ten pieces, and in various media. A series often begins with photography that inspires thought and imagination. Each medium inspires new ideas that I translate from one to another.
Currently most of my work is in oil.
Painting in oil, the substrate has a tremendous effect on my process. In the past I worked with watercolors and metallic gouache on textured rice papers. Using a grid and modulating colors like musical chords, the images were stylized interpretations of nature. The horizontal grid evolved into the square grid of tiles, gold leaf, and structure for abstract paintings.
My career in art has been a eclectic and interesting journey. The early years of my career were highlighted by working with consultants and art dealers who exhibited my work internationally and commissioned me to create large bodies of work for private residences, offices, airports, hospitals and hospitality venues. The work was both represen-tational and abstract, created on various media from watercolor to oil, monotypes and tiles.
The South Bay Focus exhibition at the Torrance Art Museum was one of my favorite exhibits because the curator, Grace Kook-Anderson, chose work with an eye to the artists' points of view.
